From China

July 17, 2008 - Nov. 30, 2008

Possessing the world’s fourth largest terrain, China resembles a massive mosaic formed by a colorful spectrum of cultural, historical, ethnic and natural elements. The mixture of the 56 different population groups, including the Han Chinese, serves as a cradle for the creation of the diverse cultural phenomena. The 55 minority groups constitute only 8 percent of the 1.3 billion inhabitants in China. However, their jewellery is a testament to the dynamic vibrant strength of modern and contemporary Chinese jewellery. In the jewellery of the minority people we discover the most contemporary expressions and elements of architectural grandeur. Naturally, their art of silver jewellery is a magnetic source of inspiration for many designers throughout the world. However, decades of the Cultural Revolution brought grave devastation to every aspect of the lives of the minority groups. The traditions and cultures of the minority people have now become an endangered cultural heritage. In the spirit of celebrating the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, “From China” exhibition held by the World Jewellery Museum will provide an opportunity to further strengthen the cultural bridge between the two nations.
